Project 3: Light
Architectural Design II- ARC 257
The goal of this project is to design a non-denominational chapel at Farmingdale State College. The College wants it to be a peaceful space where people of all faiths can worship and reflect. They believe creative use of light can help achieve this. The design will control light to create a functional and beautiful space, perfect for worship and reflection.

Light Background Research
Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini – Cornaro Chapel
The Cornaro Chapel, located in the Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria, is one of the most famous examples of Baroque architecture. Bernini designed the space to feel dramatic and emotional by combining sculpture, architecture, and lighting into one experience.
The chapel focuses on The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, which is lit by a hidden window above the sculpture. The natural light shines down onto the figures and reflects off golden bronze rays behind them, creating a glowing, heavenly effect.
Key Design Features
● Hidden Light Source: A concealed window above the sculpture directs natural light onto the altar to create a spiritual and dramatic atmosphere.
● Golden Rays: Bronze rays reflect the light and symbolize divine energy and connection to heaven.
● Theater-Like Space: Sculpted figures of the Cornaro family sit along the sides like an audience watching the scene unfold.
● Emotional Atmosphere: Curved forms, layered depth, and changing light throughout the day help make the space feel immersive and powerful.
Bernini used light not just to brighten the space, but to create emotion and emphasize the spiritual experience within the chapel.
